The Supervised Injection Services (SIS) reduces the harms associated with injection drug use and promotes the health of people who inject drugs by:
- Providing a supervised and hygienic facility for people to inject drugs
- Reducing the risk of overdose, responding to overdoses that do occur, and reducing the number of overdose deaths
- Reducing paramedic calls for overdose
- Reducing the transmission of blood-borne pathogens including HIV and hepatitis C
- Reducing the incidence of potentially serious infections leading to conditions, such as endocarditis, requiring hospitalisation
- Reducing the incidence of soft tissue injuries, including abscesses and cellulitis
- Providing referrals to other health and social services on site and in the area
- Connecting participants with community activities and increased opportunities for healthy social networking
